nintendo plan to release a new handheld. it is called the DSi.

Nintendo DSi V3 12566

but it looks like something i've seen before...

Nintendo DSi V3 Nintendo-ds

aha! now i know what it looks like! it looks almost EXACTLY the same as a ds lite!
personally i don't like it. and here is my argument as to why;

1. It looks like the ds lite. the only thing different is the buttons are in a different place. is nintendo even trying new design ideas anymore? c'mon, the power button... ugh. either stick to the old power button, or think of a new one. (id prefered the original ds button)

2. it's thinner. you might think; "yeah, it's thinner, therefore cooler! no-one wants a fat ds!" maybe, but ask yourself... do you want an anorexic ds? huh? Nintendo say;

"we were challenged to make it as thin as possible without sacrificing its durability. As a result, DSi is 2.6mm or about 12% thinner than DS Lite."

tbh i wouldn't have wasted all that money making it 12% thinner. pointless. and anyway, doesn't the ds lite break? look

Nintendo DSi V3 Dslite_crackcrack

if it broke when that thin, hate to see what the dsi would look like broken. maybe something like this;

Nintendo DSi V3 Figure04

3. the technology. there's too much of it! Will (obviously) disagrees with me, but i say that there's such a thing as too much technology, especially in something like a ds. for example...

a) A CAMERA? who are we, james friggin bond?? besides, the camara isn't even that good apparently. 0.3 megapixels. Nintendo;

"On the other hand, the DSi Camera software includes 11 types of special camera lenses. This means DSi can take pictures by utilizing a variety of special effects on a real-time basis. You can change the whole picture to black and white, colour the portions you touch or exchange the existing colour with a new one on the area you touch, make a composite picture using preinstalled frames or make the frames for yourselves, draw a variety of graffiti on the pictures, use the technology to recognize human faces and put glasses and moustaches on them, combine two people’s faces with different portions of one’s features, and confirm to what degree two faces are resembling by utilizing the face-recognition engine. These functions can be enjoyed with the unique Nintendo user interfaces that you are familiar with."

The moustache bit sounds cool. but can't you do that on photoshop? anyway if used in any ds game worth buying (not something like Tinkerbell the movie game) then its a good idea. something like phoenix wright, or some strange brain training sequel (well, it would be good in that sort of game). doing a zelda game with it might be fun if nintendo think of some good ways of using the camera in it.

b) apparently 2 touch screens now. don't have a lot of info on this, but Will likes the idea of it, me on the other hand... i don't really mind, It just seems a bit much, that's all.

c) The mp3. erm... everybody and his dog already has a thing with an mp3 in it (even an mp3! ) they designed it for you to "play with sounds". ooh. fun(!) we want butt kicking action from the worlds favourite plumber, not ladida titbit nick nack padiwack giveadogaboner musical fun crap! heres what nintendo have to say...;

"I believe Nintendo DSi can be viewed as a toy with music that also can be played with. I’m sure some of us will enjoy using DSi Sound to create a fun performance during a party."
note the "some of us" bit.

4. The name. DSi ? More like the DSiPhone. the whole console is just a mix of the ds lite, an iphone and a laptop.
in fact, you may aswell buy a laptop for £190.

5. points. the DSi now has it's own shopping channel. like the wii, *groan* its called the DSi shop (REAL ORIGINAL) .As if wiiware weren't bad enough, now theres more for ds. i can see it now: "Wario DSi Ware: mini minigames!" aaaaaagh! even worse, nintendo plan on changing the name of wii points, to help compliment the dsi: they will soon be known as 'nintendo points' DUNDUNDUUN!!!
that sux.

6. finally, the worst of the worst!! becasue they made it thinner, something awful has happened. nintendo, take it from here;

"First of all, so we can further improve the portable aspect of the DS, we were challenged to make it as thin as possible without sacrificing its durability. As a result, DSi is 2.6mm or about 12% thinner than DS Lite. As a consequence of this effort, we have decided to remove the slot for GameBoy Advance software."

NO GAMEBOY ADVANCE SLOT!!! you do realise now that nintendo may lose money on this. people in the REAL WORLD (talkin to the people who play wii music and S**t like that) still play GBA games. i do.

so, in conclusion i give this...

*drum roll*

20%.

this isn't a review. im just having a moan. only reason i gave it that much is im hoping for an AC or zelda game with playable camera feauture! and i like the idea of taking a picture of antlion and giving him a moustache !!

Quite a brutal opinion...
It doesn't look that bad, but I certainly won't be buying one in a hurry. Also, decent laptops cost a lot more the £190, and one with all the DSi's features would cost even more. The Nintendo quotes are quite funny...

Wow that was harsh. Its not exactly a step up from the lite...more like a step sideways. I'm going to wait to see what happens. I mean, everyone thought the DS itself was a stupid idea until they came out and everyone saw how fun they were

i liked the idea of a two screened console. i was very excited when the original came out! I have my brothers old one and i will never get rid of it. The ds lite was just an update, so i wasn't all that bothered when it came out. the new DSi, however.... this is a joke. i just don't see the point of having a 'sequel' to something that was already great! it's like shrek; the first was good, the second was a follow up of what happened and the third one sucked and was totally pointless!!

id change my mind though if i actually got the chance to play one... and liked it...

but i doubt i will. i mean, it's a handheld console, but with a camera, mp3, stuff... so it'll either be the same as ever (plain, but familiar) or totally different (that can be a good or bad thing).

like i said, though... if there was an AC or Zelda or Phoenix Wright game that used the camera in a logical way, then id be persuaded into liking it. but if they make stupid wii play like games featuring camera fun options (i KNOW nintend will do that), then i stick with my brutal, biased opinion.

News Flash!

The DSi's battery life has supposedly being considerably reduced than that of the DS's.

DS: 19 hours battery.
DSi: 9 hours battery.

Shocked Shocked Shocked

I found this info from a forum post I randomly came across.

Battery life is VERY important to me, because I tend to play hours of Harvest Moon at a time.
My current DS can go for 2 days without charge, but it is constantly played. I think the battery is wearing out though....
The DSi will have to charge itself every day!! WTF indeed!!!! And if this battery starts to run down, you'll have to have it plugged in everytime you play on it! Useless for long journeys!!

Nintendo have to really think now. If they plan on releasing yet another handheld (nintendo DSi Lite the 2nd probably, LOL) then they have to have better ideas than this! Honestly, it looks like R2D2 and a Wii had a baby (the DSi) and it got squashed by a steam roller!! Very Happy

I can't wait for they're new home console(!) Rolling Eyes

Can you honestly say that!?

Have you been on a DSi?
...
Have I, you ask?
...
No.

But that is not the point.
The point is that do not judge untill you have been on it first, it's like everything else in life, "do not judge until you know!!"

And nintendo could make a new, better and longer lasting battery with ease!

I just feel that Nintendo have gotten lazy, if I sum up everything I like about the DSi:
-Webcam, but this will only be good if pictochat goes online, or it will be on my DISLIKE list,
-Larger touch screen, good, but i'm not paying £120 odd quid of my parents money in a recession for a slightly larger touch screen!
-DsWare, good, but wouldn't a GameBoy slot of been better?
All in all i'm not paying £120 for that!

There was a poll on Gamefaqs qbout the DSi where 80689 people voted. Here are the results:

Do you plan to buy a Nintendo DSi?

I've already got a Japanese one 1.04% (843 votes)
Yes, I'll buy it when it comes out locally 10.75% (8672 votes)
Maybe, I'll have to try it out first 21.1% (17022)
No, the lack of a GBA port kills it for me 17.84% (14398)
No, it's not worth buying to me 49.27% (39754)

So, it looks like most people think it sucks, in fact, almost half of all gamers think its not worth buying. lol.

and to answer will's post, no, i haven't played on one, but, as you say, neither have you. i have said many a time that if i get the chance to play one on (not buy it), i will, but i will probably not like it or i will be mildly impressed, then realise it's only fun once you've played with the 'fun'(!) features.

More DSi info!

The Dsi will be released all accross Europe on April 3. It will have an expected retail price of about £150.

Nintendo are also hoping to release it in Australia on April 2. All PAL countries will be getting it in black and white.

America will not be seeing it for a while, although it will cost $170 over there, the equivalent of £118.

I got this info today and the article was posted today, so its new

Grr! I was about to post that! I just read an article in the daily telegraph about it (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/technologyreviews/4807839/Nintendo-DSi-exclusive-hands-on-preview.html) It has a video (on the web!) but if you search on there search bar there is one questioning whether it is the ultimate lifestyle accessory, it is a very good and completely unbiased review, but never mentions anything about the web browser, and it even mentions a notepad on it, so have Nintendo given up on the browser or will it be a download of DSi Ware?

I think it'll see a May/Summer release in North America, but I can't remember where I read that.

If there is a web browser on the DSi, then I bloody hope it's tolerable this time. I've only heard bad things about the version available for the standard DS models.

Then again, a bad browser wouldn't be a deal breaker for me - I can't see the appeal in the pay-as-you-go internet you get on mobiles.
